The 2019 Kentucky Derby is rapidly approaching. As the leaderboard finalizes, take a look at one of Bob Baffert's top Derby contenders.
.) Game Winner was purchased for $110,000 as a yearling by Gary and Mary West. Since then, he has earned over $1.6 million.
.) Game Winner’s sire Candy Ride is also the sire of Gun Runner, Shared Belief, Capt. Candyman Can, and other successful racehorses.
.) Game Winner currently holds a record of 5:4-1-0. His only loss came by a nose to Omaha Beach in the Gr.2 Rebel Stakes.
.) Bob Baffert, the trainer of Game Winner, also trained Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify.
.) Game Winner’s dam, Indyan Giving, is by A.P. Indy and is out of the Champion-Older Mare Fleet Indian.
.) Game Winner looks to be only the third horse to win both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Kentucky Derby.
.) The Santa Anita Derby on April 6th will likely be Game Winner’s last race before the Kentucky Derby.
.) On his path to the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Game Winner won the Gr.1 American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita. It was a very fitting win as he shares the same trainer and groom as American Pharoah.
.) Bob Baffert says that Game Winner is the type of horse to improve more from racing rather than from training.
.) Game Winner has won races running off of the pace and has also won tracking the pace.
